Mambo! Mambo!
PARE MOUNTAINS
I don't know this young lady's name. Only that her energy was infectious, the avocados and sugar cane she sold us delicious, and that I wish her the best. |

Siesta
CUZCO
It was a cool afternoon and rain seemed eminent. Enraptured with the Incan architecture I wandered the streets of Cuzco, Peru. When I came across this woman asleep in an alley, my mind was flooded with questions about her life. Who was she? Was she cold? Did the affluence behind her know she was locked out? |

Jambo Rafiki!
TANZANIA
That is the smile of an untroubled soul. Now, I don't imagine that our friend here was burdened with an excess of material possession, no one in this village seemed to be, but he was quick to extend his friendship, and that was worth more than any thing. |

The New England Shaman
ASHBURNHAM, MASS.
One spring day I was walking the back 40 with my Grandfather when he began to detail the projects of the coming season. He was planning on opening up a piece of land for a new crop, building new bird houses, and painting the farm house...he looked at me, paused, and said, "As long as you have land, you've got something to do..." Good work, strong convictions, he's a yankee. |

The Great Wide Open
ET HIGHWAY, NEVADA
Last fall a friend and I pedaled bicycles across the USA. Circumstance forced my friend to turn back in Utah, several days later I was as lonely as I had ever been. |

Rock n Roll
OHIO
Something incredible about a moment like this. Tired, energized, the pulse of the road rising through the bike and into your soul. A complete sensory explosion. |

The Ambassador
PARE MOUNTAINS
Look at that face. Full of wonderment and friendship. Though I don't know the little guys relationship to the kids selling the produce it seemed that he was the rare sort of younger sibling who directed the action of the elders with an unquestioned authority.

Life is Good
EAST AFRICA
The bananas grow tall, the songs flow from the mouths of kith and kin, and the smiles come free. Life is indeed good. |

Pantalones! Quien neccesitas?
POPOYO, NICARAGUA
The river in the background was fordable at low tide. The oxen, led by the fellow with the dapper pink shirt, rubber fishing boots, and Sunday hat, didn't seem to mind the bull shark dorsal fins at the delta. |

Pobre
NICARAGUA
Though 80% of Nicaragua lives on less than $1 USD per day there is occasionally a particularly fierce reminder of what this looks like. |

Queen's Eye View
PLAYA MADERAS, NICARAGUA
Wake to the surf, gallo pinto for breakfast, chess and books and hammocks until the afternoon surf, rum and fresh fish until the sky turns pink with tomorrow. |

A Contemplative Hiker
CERRO PLATA, ARGENTINA
The climber in profile is a kid named Andy. We are both Alaskans and met on a different mountain that we were each soloing. Later we teamed up to drink a bunch of wine and take a crack at Cerro Plata. |
